The Christian literary marketplace is littered with literature, thanks to technological advances that allow almost anyone to electronically publish written work. Given that we cannot read everything and that we should not believe everything that we do read, we must make choices as to what we will invest our time reading.
Let me bring to your attention a new book that is very helpful in understanding how to interpret the Bible. It is called “The Theory & Practice of Biblical Hermeneutics,” published by Lampion Press. This is a collection of essays on the topic of Biblical Hermeneutics in honor of Dr. Elliot Johnson, who has served as Professor of Bible at Dallas Seminary for over 45 years and was one of my professors many years ago. He introduced many students to the thought and theory of authorial intent, articulated by Zane Hodges, a former teacher of Dr. Johnson and E.D. Hirsh, who wrote a foreword to this book.
Dr. Johnson has been and continues to be a strong proponent of Free Grace Theology and has utilized a biblical approach to Hermeneutics to make the case for Free Grace Theology. Contributing authors of the book include former students of Dr. Johnson, some of them are proponents of Free Grace Theology.
This is not an easy book and the theory of Hermeneutics is not an easy topic to understand. But I believe you will find this book an important work that will help you learn and affirm the importance of how to interpret the Bible.
